Kingdom Now is a free association of
Christians who are organizing around Jesus's proclamation that "The
Kingdom of God is at hand." This Kingdom, which proclaims Jesus
Christ as King, is not a nebulous or intangible idea, but a concrete
and viable Kingdom that is a true alternative social structure to
the "kingdoms" (nation-states) that exist in the world around us. It
is a Kingdom within "kingdoms," and it unites all of Jesus's
followers as its citizens. As citizens of Jesus's kingdom, we strive
to live in loving respect with all people including
those governments under which we are earthly citizens. However,
our only true allegiance is to Jesus's Kingdom and his
imminent reign upon the Earth. We join Jesus in praying for
the day that His Kingdom will be completed on earth as is in heaven.
We believe that the tragedies of 11 September 2001
are grievous not only for the lives taken by terrorists, but also
because their aftermath has powerfully revealed that we, the Church
in the United States, have prostrated ourselves before the idol of
our nation. Thus, it is with great sadness that we humbly put forth
the call for churches in the United States to join us in repenting
of our sins of nationalism. We pray that our churches would turn
from the United States' twisted notions of liberty, democracy and
justice, from the historical misconceptions of "America's Christian
heritage" and from the ubiquitous greed that drives our nation.
Jesus is calling his people in the United States today to grieve the
sins of their nation, to return to their first love, and to once
again recognize him alone as their King and the provider of their
security.
